  • 2 engineers erected the tower in one day on 26th September 1990
  • The tower was shipped from Denmark in one piece on a transporter and required a police escort to bring it to Godmanchester
  • The cost of installing it was £175,000 in 1990.  It paid for itself in 3 years
  • The centre can use the electricity itself but it is more economical to sell the electricity to our local electrical company
  • The height to the tip of the blades is 43 metres.  The hub is 30 metres high
  • The tower can be seen from 10 miles away
  • The tower has been built to withstand wind speeds of up to 180 mph
  • The blades do stop in winds of under 3.5 m/sec.  This does not happen too often and only for a short time
  • The blades cut out in winds of over 25 m/sec because at higher speeds the structure could become unstable
  • It has a life expectancy of 25 years and Wood Green Animal Shelters has allowed 20 years before refurbishing
