The Surgery Department is a busy vital part of the Shelter. Every animal (except field animals) is seen by either a veterinary surgeon or veterinary nurse during the re homing process. Where appropriate all animals are wormed, flea treated, vaccinated and neutered before being adopted. Alongside routine procedures more complex work is carried out including fracture repair, major dental work and cruciate ligament repair. Some animals can spend weeks in the care of the Department recovering for illness or injury. |

How can Volunteers help?
There are numerous ways volunteers can assist in the Surgery. Alongside spending time giving TLC to very sick or badly injured patients there are instruments to wash and pack up, animals to hold for the vets or nurses to examine or treat and general tasks like walking and feeding the dogs in our care. Part of the nursing duties include thorough cleaning of areas like the theatres and laboratory, again this is an area where volunteers can really help. All in all just having an extra pair of hands can make a difference to the animals we care for and treat on a daily basis.
