Lost cats

It can be a worrying time when your cat goes missing, so here are a few things that can help you find your cat.

found cats■Ask neighbours to check their sheds, gardens, garages or greenhouses for signs of your cat.

■Ask neighbours if they have seen your cat, giving them a full description and showing them a photograph.

■Create posters to put up around your local area.

■Place adverts in your local newspaper and newsletter.

■If there are no sightings, report it to as many local rehoming centres and websites as possible – we have listed contact details below to help you.

■Report your cat missing immediately. Many people leave it for a couple of weeks before reporting a cat missing, especially if it’s unneutered as they quite often wander off looking for a mate. Your cat could have already been brought into a rehoming centre and rehomed in this time. If no microchip is found, rehoming centres are not required by law to keep a cat for any longer than seven days before finding it a new home.

■If your cat is microchipped, inform the microchip company, this is usually Petlog (contact details below). Ensure that you update any information that may have changed and tell them your cat is missing, please have your cat’s microchip number to hand before ringing.

He has always been a wanderer since we got him one and a half years ago.
But this time he has been gone for over two weeks. Knocked on doors, posted leaflets ,don't know what else to do. No collar (he would'nt wear one), but he is micro chipped.

Hi there. I want to share my experience with you regarding your lost cat. Recently my 5 year old male neutered tabby cat went missing about 2 weeks ago. We moved to our new house last December and ever since the snow melted we would let him and our other pets out in the fenced backyard to play and enjoy the fresh air. On October 26 2011 he went missing and the only explanation was he jumped the fence. after enjoying endless months of nice weather without ever attempting to leave our fenced yard he decided to take off and go missing :(. I Immediately contacted my local humane society's around my city just to cover all our tracks, and gave them information and pictures for there records and they posted an online ad. I took advice from other peoples experience and made numerous amounts of fliers and posted them all over my neighborhood on the mail boxes and even went door to door putting them under peoples front porch mats. My family and I would go driving around the blocks every night and morning and take walks calling his name to no luck. We even handed out some fliers to the local vets in the area just in case some other family decided to take him in as there own. We called the humane society's every couple of days to check in for any good news. Many sleepless nights and long days went by without any luck. A few tips would come our way from the ads we handed out saying they saw him in certain areas around the block but he still didn't come home. We put food out on the porch and in the backyard as well some cat litter that he used just to help guide him home and even left old clothing with our scent on it to help him in case he was lost. Cats are very territorial and usually don't travel to far away from home. So last night I got a tip from someone who saw our ad we posted on the internet site kijiji and she told me that her family was feeding a cat that matched our cats description and he would come around every couple of days. I immediately went to her area which was about a 8 minute drive late at night and started checking around the side streets and sure enough our cat Chewy was sitting on someones front porch. We approached him very slowly and shook a bag of treats and eventually he came running to us! WE FOUND HIM on November 6 2011. Hes a lot thinner and very scared at the moment so we are currently isolating him in our bed room until we take him to the vet tomorrow. But he looks to be in good shape and are so thankful for everyone's help, you just never know who will answer your ad and what area they are from. So please keep the faith and never give up!

    Hi there,
My cat Abbie, female went missing as a kitten around 2 years ago, she was only 2months. Abbie was strong and scared of nothing even our fully grown terrier, in fact he was scared of her ! :)
She left home and disapeared after doing everything from looking for her to giving leaflets in local pet shelters and vets we stopped bu then yesterday 9th December 2011 she appeared in our back garden.
This is amazing as we have moved 3 times since she went missing and now live in wales, we used to live in london. We are certain it's her because she has a mini scar like birth mark. It's amazing how a kitten followed us fofr 2 years from london to wales.
