Common problems with gerbils
Gerbils are hardy creatures. Most of their health problems are the result of a poor diet or inappropriate accommodation.
Parasites and coat condition
Parasite problems and poor coat condition are more likely to be seen when gerbils are housed on the incorrect bedding.
Symptoms of a parasite infestation include hair loss, red irritated skin, blood around ears, self-inflicted wounds across the body, erratic behaviour and a greasy coat
If your gerbils are showing any of the above signs, you should consult your vet
Dental problems
Gerbils’ teeth continually grow. Gerbils should always be provided with fruit tree wood and willow toys to gnaw on as this will help to keep their teeth in a healthy condition.
Signs of possible dental problems include sudden weight loss, drooling, visibly over grown incisors, abscess/ infection around the face
If your gerbils are showing any of these signs, you should consult your vet.
Tail loss or shedding of skin
Gerbils should never be picked up by the middle or tip of their tail. The safest way is to cup the gerbil in your hands.
If a gerbil is picked up by its tail one of two things can happen as it fights to escape.
-
Tail loss: the tail may break clean off
-
Shedding of skin: the tail is degloved, meaning that the skin on the tail comes off leaving exposed flesh and bone.
Injuries to a gerbil’s tail require immediate attention from your vet.
