Emaciated Gracie lucky to be alive
Young Gracie the Lurcher is receiving round the clock care after being found emaciated in Cambridge on January 7th.
Gracie was brought to our Godmanchester Centre by a member of the public extremely malnourished in one of the worst cases of neglect the Charity has seen.
When she arrived in our care, Gracie was shivering cold and welcomed a small bowl of tasty food and a drink of water. After a thorough medical examination by our veterinary team, our fears of severe emaciation were confirmed. Gracie weighs just 14kgs which is approximately two thirds of her recommended weight of 20kgs. It would have taken weeks of critical underfeeding for her to become so malnourished.
Gracie has been given a warm kennel to rest in as well as lots of soft blankets to lie on and a selection of toys to play with. While the weather is so cold, Gracie has also been fitted with her own coat so she can be kept warm while on a walk.
She will need on going aftercare including a special diet which will see her eating four to five small meals to ensure she puts on weight slowly. Gracie will be given small amounts of daily exercise so she can slowly build up her strength.
Despite her experience, Gracie is still an affectionate dog with a trusting nature, who will make a perfect pet for a loving family once she is back to full health.
