1. Gifts in Lieu/Celebration
Gifts in Celebration are becoming increasingly popular and are a wonderful way for you to remember your favourite charity on a special occasion.
Examples of these gifts include people choosing to give to charity rather than accepting gifts on occasions such as birthdays and anniversaries. Also asking for donations to charity in lieu of flowers is becoming an increasingly popular way for those organising a funeral to honour a loved one.
Even the traditional wedding list is nowadays often forfeited so that donations can be made to charity.
'Wood Green was delighted when Dawn and Damian Symons decided to ask for donations to one of their favourite charities instead of receiving gifts on their big day. Dawn said “Damian and I decided that we would like guests to give to one of our chosen charities rather than buying us wedding gifts. Like many couples these days, we had already been living together for a while and didn’t want people spending their money on brand new household items which we didn’t really need. Our family has adopted two lovely rescue cats from Wood Green in the past and from our visits to the Shelter we know what an amazing job the Charity does. This was just our little way of saying thank you.”
Shares
Even unwanted shares can be donated to charity. What’s more when unwanted shares are donated to a good cause the charity can claim tax relief back from the Government which enhances the amount the share is worth. Share giving is so easy and comes with two other huge benefits. In addition to the benefit to the charity, you, the donor, benefit from:
Income tax relief on the value of the shares
Exemption from Capital Gains tax
If your shares have made a gain you will not be taxed on it, if you donate the shares.
Organising your own event can be a great and fun way to help raise money for the animals at Wood Green. This could involve having a stall at a local school fete selling cakes to organising your own quiz night, race night or even a dog show.
We’re here on hand to help you with your event as we want it to be a big success.

5. Join a local supporter group
There are over 10 groups throughout the country organising a wide range of events to raise money and awareness. They help plan and run sponsored events, dog shows, county fairs and supermarket collections. Group members meet regularly to plan these events and come up with new ideas.
Some group members take on special responsibilities such as Chairperson, Treasurer, and Secretary to general helper. You commit whatever time you can and get involved at your own pleasure.
They are great fun and a wonderful way to make new friends and raise funds for Wood Green.
Please get in touch with Wood Green and we’ll give you details of your local group or help you if you want to set up one of your own.
6. Recycle
This is a really easy way to raise funds for the charity without costing you any time or money.
We can raise funds through old mobile phones, ink cartridges, used stamps and unwanted gold. In fact, unwanted gold has already raised over £2,000 for the Shelters in the short time we been part of the scheme.
For a recycling bag, please contact us and we’ll pop it into the post for you. It’s a freepost address so won’t even cost you the price of a stamp.
Alternatively, if you would like to take some into work please let us know and we’ll make sure you have plenty to pass round to colleagues or even friends and family.
We also have 4 charity shops; based at our Godmanchester and Heydon Shelter as well as one in St. Ives, Cambridgeshire and Sandy, Bedfordshire. All of our shops take in unwanted goods like books, ornaments and clothes however we do not take in any electrical goods.
