Here at Wood Green we use a great number of products. Below are some of the things staff on the dog section find most helpful. All of the items are on sale in our pet care and gift shop or available via mail order on 08701 904090 ext 266.
Walkeeze harness – At the shelter we use a great number of harnesses and we find the walkeezy particularly good with dogs that pull on the lead.
Halti harness - As above the halti harness is excellent at getting dogs that pull very hard on a lead to walk nicely on a loose lead
Gencon All in one – We use the gencon all in one with dogs that pull excessively on the lead or have other training issues, this great product is particularly helpful as it gives you better control of the dogs head, this means getting his or her attention back on you is much easier. This headcollar is comfortable for the dog to wear and avoids putting excessive strain on the dogs neck which can happen with other similar designs if they are not used correctly.
Kongs – We find feeding dogs from stuffing kongs an excellent way to keep young and active dogs occupied and out on trouble, we use them all the time in the kennels and most of the shelter staff use them at home for their own dogs. They are a great way to help dogs when they are left home alone, if the owner gives the tasty stuffed kong to the dog as he or she leaves the dog quickly begins to learn to enjoy its time home alone. Dogs that chew excessively may benefit from the harder wearing black one.
Goodie ship – As with kongs these are great when stuffed with food you can try stuffing with biscuits, sausage, cheese and many other tasty treats.
Activity balls- As with kongs feeding from activity balls is an excellent way to keep young and active dogs occupied and out on trouble, we use them all the time in the kennels and most of the shelter staff use them at home for there own dogs. Buster balls are suitable for dried foods the dog learns to push it around to release the food. They are very hard wearing and I’ve yet to see a dog destroy one.
Raggers -Playing with Raggers is a great way to wear your dog out, dogs enjoy tug of war games and they seam to love the texture of this toy; it will make a great addition to your toy box, its also easy to throw due to its size and weight.
Equi fleece (available from October) – This warm fleece is ideal for whippets, greyhounds and other fine coated dogs who feel the cold, it offers more protection under the dogs chest than most other coats.
Easidri Grooming towel – This is great for drying your dog after a bath. It removes most of the water and brings them up dryer than an ordinary towel, it saves on drying time and laundry as you can rinse, ring out, and immediately re-use (it’s designed to be used damp) the grooming towel for as many dogs as you like. As a rule the small size does all dogs, I tried the large size for my big hairy border collie and found the small one would be the better size.
Groomking Shedding Blade- There are many good grooming products and this one is excellent at stripping out dead coat. Liz who has five dogs said it was the best thing she has bought this year she found it worked better than anything on her lurchers and especially her saluki X who has a thick coat with lots of dead hair.
