"At 18 months, my cat Tiffany was diagnosed with an incurable illness.  So far, Petplan's 'Covered for Life' policy has paid out over £3,000 for her medication and will continue to do so over her lifetime."  Mrs K Stotter, June 2006

WHY PET INSURANCE?

Unexpected expenses come when you least expect them, such as veterinary treatment or boarding charges for your pet if you are admitted to hospital suddenly.

Pet insurance can help with the cost of these sudden, unexpected events, giving you peace of mind whilst your pet gets the treatment it needs.

  • 1 in 3 pets may need urgent veterinary attention this year (source: Pet Plan Ltd, 2006)
  • Technical advances mean that vets are able to do more for pets, including using the latest diagnostic treatment which can be expensive
  • You are more likely to claim on your pet insurance than your car or household policies (source: Allianz  Insurance plc, 2006)
  • Third party liability cover for dogs is increasingly important in case of legal action

DIFFERENT TYPES OF PET INSURANCE

Not all pet insurance is the same and it is important to ensure that you understand the type of cover you are buying.  Two more popular types of pet insurance are:

Lifetime policies (also known as 'Covered for life' policies)

Veterinary fees cover is provided up to a maximum amount per year.  As long as a lifetime policy is renewed each year without a break, you should be covered for any illness right into the pet's old age.  This type of policy is designed for pet owners concerned about their pet developing a long-term, chronic or recurring illness.  These include arthritis or eczema and would need treating by a vet over a long period of time, often for life.  Typically, a lifetime policy is a popular type of cover for pedigree cats and dogs, as they are more prone to chronic illnesses.

Time-limited policies (also known as '12 month' policies)

Veterinary fees cover is provided up to a maximum amount per condition.  Time-limited policies give pet owners protection for a limited period, typically 12 months, after any injury or illness that needs vet treatment.  After this period, the condition you claimed for will be permanently excluded from the policy, even if it persists for the rest of your pet's life.  Typically, a time-limited policy is a popular type of cover for owners who are worried about the initial cost of treating an illness or an injury, such as a road traffic accident.

You should be aware that for both Lifetime and Time-limited policies, you will not usually be covered for any medical conditions showing clinical signs before the policy started.  For all policies, terms, conditions, and excesses typically apply.

WHY PETPLAN?

Petplan only deals with pet insurance, which makes them true specialists.  They don't insure cars or homes, just pets.  So they're as committed to animals as we are.

Over the past 30 years, millions of pet owners have chosen Petplan to look after their pets, and their pockets, helping them with the cost of veterinary care when things go wrong.  Today they cover more household pets in the UK than any other provider (source: Datamonitor, July 2006) and, on average, pay out more than £1million in claims each week (source: Pet Plan Ltd 2006).

Petplan understands the special needs of pet owners, which is why they have a range of policies that you can choose from designed to suit both your pocket and your pet's needs.  And Petplan also recognises that it's often the little things that make a big difference.  Like getting your claim settled quickly, or getting them to pay the vet directly.

And like us, the people at Petplan are pet lovers.  So they work closely with animal welfare charities and support them financially through their own Petplan Charitable Trust.

That's why we're working with Petplan.  And maybe that's why so many vets, breeders and other animal welfare charities turn to them for pet protection.  In fact, in a recent survey more than 9 out of 10 veterinary professionals chose Petplan as their preferred insurance provider (source: Pet Plan Ltd. 2006).
