SMALL ANIMAL FACTS

Taking on a pet of any type is a big responsibility. It will rely on you for all of its needs. At Wood Green Animal Shelters we encourage people to house and look after their animals in a way that promotes physical and emotional well being. A responsible pet owner will go out of their way to protect their animal from making a mistake that could, in some cases cost it its life and/or injure another person. A good diet, prompt medical attention, providing quality accomodation and training where necessary are all aspects of responsible pet ownership.

Time/Commitments/ Lifestyle
Different types of animals require different amounts of your time and attention. Young animals generally require more time than older ones. If you are already living a busy lifestyle and enjoy an active social life you must give careful consideration to your choice of pet.

Financial Implications
There is no escaping the fact that pets cost money. Depending on your final choice you will need to consider the following costs:
Purchase price
Set up costs
Insurance
Food
Boarding
Training
Medical costs

Neutering
Environment/Space
Thought must be given to the amount of space that you have available for the pet of your choice. It may
seem obvious that some need more than others, but you may be surprised at just how much space that
some of the smaller pet choices require. The Animal Welfare act 2006 states:
"Owners and keepers are responsible for ensuring that the welfare needs of their animals are met"
This includes the need
1- For a suitable environment
2- For a suitable diet
3- To exhibit normal behaviour patterns
4- To be housed with, or apart from other animals
5- To be protected from pain, injury, suffering and disease
Other Animals

Careful consideration must be given to the compatability between your choice of new pet and any existing
animals that you might have. Not all species get on well with each other and it is not always beneficial for
an existing pet to share yur attention.
Children

Young children can get very excited at the thought of getting a pet, this is natural but careful consideration
should be given to the type of pet that you introduce as some are more suitable than others. Wood Green
Animal Shelters have learned that once the novelty has worn off it is often the parents that are left to be
the animals main carer. With this in mind we advise that unless you as parents are prepared to take on such
a pet for yourself, please do not consider purchasing one solely for your child.
