Cheddar the cat
Cheddar the cat nearly loses one of his nine lives.
Cheddar is a very social and friendly cat, it is thought that at one time he had a home with family and friends and lived a content and happy life. Just over a month ago Cheddar was found sheltering from the scorching sun in some bushes. He was all alone, severely dehydrated and had two broken legs on the right side of his body.
It was by chance that Cheddar was found by a member of the public and they brought him to Wood Green, hoping to save his life.
On arrival vets placed Cheddar on a drip and examined him further. They discovered that the breaks in his legs were so old that they had had time to heal. In pain and distraught he had learnt to survive with his injuries and was even walking on the break of his front leg whilst dragging the back one behind him.
An orthopaedic vet decided that the front leg could not be saved due to multiple breakages but as the back leg was a clean break, they decided to apply an external fixator which Cheddar appears to have not even noticed and already he is managing to stand.
This fixator will be in place for eight weeks before further x-rays will tell us how well his leg is healing.
Cheddar had his elbow skin reconstruction operation last week and its looking great! Much easier than we originally anticipated so hopefully the healing will be quite straightforward. We took repeat xrays of the fractured hind leg and are sending them off to the orthopaedic vet at Cromwells for comment on his progress. Cheddar seems very impressed with his ‘new and improved’ elbow!
